This pair of tragedies provides the nucleus of McCann’s “Apeirogon.” An apeirogon is a polygon with an infinite yet countable number of sides. Her title, A Visit from the Goon Squad, won both the 2011 Pulitzer Prize and the 2011 National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. A decade later, 10-year-old Abir Aramin, donned in her school uniform and holding a candy bracelet she had just bought, was shot in the back of the head by an 18-year-old Israeli soldier. She is the author of The Invisible Circus, Look at Me, Emerald City and Other Stories, The Keep, and Manhattan Beach, which won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction in 2018.
